Arapahoe is a town located in Pamlico County, North Carolina. As of the 2004 census, the town had a total population of 434. Arapahoe shares many of its roles and duties with Minnesott Beach, North Carolina.
Arapahoe is located at 35°1'33" North, 76°49'44" West (35.025914, -76.828860).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.7 km2 (2.2 mi2). 5.7 km2 (2.2 mi2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Arapahoe is located near the mouth of the Neuse River at the Pamlico Sound. From Arapahoe (and through Minnesott Beach), the North Carolina Ferry System has a 20 minute ferry ride from Minnesott Beach to Cherry Branch. This ferry ride leads to Havelock, North Carolina, Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station, and Beaufort, North Carolina.
A project currently under consideration is a bridge that would span the Neuse River connecting Minnesott Beach to Havelock. This project, on the state of North Carolina transportation hotspots, was recently pushed back into holding status while other projects are re-arranged to better use the new revised budget.
Though not within the city limits, there are sub-regions of Arapahoe. These areas include Holt's Chapel, Kershaw, Janerio, Dawson's Creek, Taylor's Neck, and Cash Corner. Dawson's Creek area is the basis for Kevin Williamson's WB television show.
As of the census of 2000, there are 436 people, 188 households, and 128 families residing in the town. The population density is 76.9/km2 (199.4/mi2). There are 214 housing units at an average density of 37.7/km2 (97.9/mi2). The racial makeup of the town is 89.91% White, 6.19% African American, 0.23% Native American, 1.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.52% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 5.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 188 households out of which 26.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.8% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 27.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.75.
In the town the population is spread out with 20.6% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 31.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.3 males.

Arapahoe was founded a few years after New Bern, North Carolina by settlers leaving the New Bern colony. The running date of Arapahoe's founding was 1714. Arapahoe was incorporated into a town in 1921, when its post office opened.
Arapahoe has 2 different versions of town's name. One version was that it came from a tribe of Native Americans living in the area. This tribe was a branch from the local Pampticoe. The second version was that the name Arapahoe came from a prized race horse of one of the local inhabitants.
